What is Kulintang? Please watch how the expert played the Kulintang.

Kulintang is a modern term for an ancient instrumental form of music composed on a row of small, horizontally laid gongs that function melodically, accompanied by larger, suspended gongs and drums. As part of the larger gong-chime culture of Southeast Asia, kulintang music ensembles have been playing for many centuries in regions of the Eastern Malay Archipelago—the Southern Philippines, Eastern Indonesia, Eastern Malaysia, Brunei and Timor,[6] although this article has a focus on the Philippine Kulintang traditions of the Maranaoand Maguindanao peoples in particular. Kulintang evolved from a simple native signaling tradition and developed into its present form with the incorporation of knobbed gongs from Sunda.[5] Its importance stems from its association with the indigenous cultures that inhabited these islands prior to the influences of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity or the West, making Kulintang the most developed tradition of Southeast Asian archaic gong-chime ensembles.

Technically, kulintang is the Maguindanao, Ternate and Timor term for the idiophone of metal gong kettles which are laid horizontally upon a rack to create an entire kulintang set.[7] It is played by striking the bosses of the gongs with two wooden beaters. Due to its use across wide variety groups and languages, the kulintang is also called kolintang by the Maranao and those in Sulawesi, kulintangangulintangan by those in Sabah and the Sulu Archipelago and totobuang by those in central Maluku.[8]
By the twentieth century, the term kulintang had a come to denote an entire Maguindanao ensemble of five to six instruments.[9]Traditionally the Maguindanao term for the entire ensemble is basalen or palabunibunyan, the latter term meaning “an ensemble of loud instruments” or “music-making” or in this case “music-making using a kulintang.”[10]

Ikigai: The Japanese Secret To A Happy Life

The pressure to find happiness can lead to a sense of inadequacy and disappointment.
In fact, the pressure to be happy can make you unhappy.
Instead of forcing yourself, try Ikigai. It can get you out of bed in the morning.
In the culture of Okinawa, Japan, Ikigai (pronounced “eye-ka-guy”) roughly translates to “reason for being.”
In a 7-year study involving about 43,000 adults, it was found that those adults who were able to find their Ikigai were alive 7 years after the study.
This was even after taking other factors, like diseases, into account.
Ikigai is similar to “happiness”.
The difference is that even if you are miserable now but have a goal in mind, you may still feel Ikigai.
Have you ever been so absorbed in doing something that you forget to drink and eat?
What were you doing?
You may find your Ikigai in those moments.
If you can find out what you are good at, what you can be paid for, what the world needs and what you absolutely love doing, then you have your Ikigai.

Let’s break it down:

1. What you love: It’s going to be something that you do because you enjoy doing it. Make a list.
2. Be good at it: If you enjoy it, you’re likely to be good or at least decent at it. Make a list.
3. Can be paid for: For it to be Ikigai, you should be able to make a decent living off of it. Is there a niche for it? Make a list.
4. The world should need it: It should be something people find useful. Make a list.
By now you should have four lists.
Is there anything that exists on all four of them?
That’s a really good contender for Ikigai.
Also, consider the things on the “I love doing it” and “The world needs it lists”.
Are you suddenly going to start loving doing something that you don’t enjoy doing?
Not likely.
It’s easier to get really good at something you enjoy or figure out a way to make a living from.

Ikigai may be an answer to the Millennial frustration

I want my life to have meaning and consequence. On the other hand, I want to enjoy the lifestyle that comes with money.
Whether it’s Ikigai or what Chris Myers calls Enlightened Entrepreneurship, find your passion and then the medium through which to express your passion.
Ikigai isn’t about working harder and longer.
In fact, only 31% of Japanese say they’ve found their Ikigai at work, which means 69% of people find it elsewhere.
Ikigai is about feeling that your work makes a difference in people’s lives.
Unlike the English term “purpose in life”, it need not refer to dauntingly large or spectacular projects.
It doesn’t need to be grand or showy.
You can find your Ikigai in doing one small thing as well as you possibly can.

Managing a Savings Account

Deciding how to save

Having a savings account in a bank or other financial institution allows you to keep your money in a safe place and earn interest on it.
It's recommended that you save 10 percent of your income each month. Before you decide how much to save, review your budget, financial goals, and objectives. (Look at your goals worksheet and budget from earlier in this tutorial.) Once you decide on a savings plan, consider the three main types of savings accounts:
Basic savings or passbook accounts allow you to make a minimum deposit, beginning as low as Php100. These types of plans earn low-interest rates, but you can easily withdraw or deposit funds
Certificates of deposit (CD) accounts earn a higher interest rate than traditional savings accounts, but you must make a larger minimum deposit—between $1,000 and $5,000. And, you must keep your money in the CD for a specified period of time. There is a penalty for early withdrawal.
Money market accounts earn a higher interest rate than traditional savings accounts, but you must make a larger minimum deposit—between $500 and $2,500. There is also a limit on the number of monthly withdrawals from this type of account.
Save money regularly so you will be better prepared to deal with an emergency and achieve your financial goals.

Beginning of Ramadan

Question:
Why doesn't the whole Muslim world start Ramadan and celebrate 'Eeds on same days?
Fatwa:
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, may Allah exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The reason all Muslims do not fast or break the fast on the same day is due to the difference of opinion among the scholars in considering the different times of crescent rising from one country to another.  They differ also about whether or not the month could be determined astronomically.

The Muslim scholars differed about the sighting of the crescent, i.e. if it is seen in one Muslim country, are all the Muslims obliged to fast and break the fast by this sighting, or is it that every country or those countries must have their own sighting of crescent rising?

The majority of scholars of the Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools are of the opinion that everybody has to adhere to the sighting if this is confirmed.

Ibn 'Umar narrated that the Prophet said: "If you see the crescent, you have to fast, (i.e. start the month of Ramadan) and if you see it (again) you have to break the fast, but if the weather is cloudy (and you are unable to see the crescent) then you have to estimate it." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

In another narration that explains the above mentioned one, he said: "If you are unable to see the moon because of clouds, then count 30 days." [Muslim]

Imam Ash-Shafi'ee and some other Muslim scholars say that there is a difference in the rising of the crescent from one country to another. This was the opinion of Ibn Abbas who said: "This was the order of the Prophet ." [Muslim]

Among the reasons the Muslims differ regarding the beginning of Ramadan and its end (fasting and breaking the fast) is that some Muslim scholars determine the month by astronomical measurements supporting their opinion with the saying of the Prophet : "You have to estimate it."  They understand it as calculating the places of the rising and setting of the crescent.

However, some Muslim scholars are of the opinion that the difference of the rising of the moon from one country to another has its own consideration and that the month of Ramadan is not determined by astronomical calculations.

Allah Know best.

Saudi Civil Defence warns of strong winds and dust affecting Riyadh province

RIYADH: The General Directorate of Civil Defense in Riyadh called for caution Friday after an advanced alert from the General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental Protection warned that some governorates in Riyadh Province including Al-Kharj, Shaqra and Al-Majma’ah will experience strong winds and dust that will cause low visibility.
The media spokesman for Civil Defense in Riyadh Maj. Mohammed Al-Hammadi urged all asthma patients and those with breathing problems, in general, to follow the appropriate medical instructions and avoid traveling on roads that are affected by severe sandstorms as much as possible.
Earlier, sandstorms hit several cities in Saudi Arabia on Thursday and disrupted road and air transport across the Kingdom.
The early warning center of the national Saudi Meteorology and Protection of the Environment agency issued a nationwide warning stating that unstable weather will affect many areas on Thursday and Friday.
The agency said the capital Riyadh will also get its share of the sandstorm and it is expected to continue until midday on Friday.
The sand and poor visibility resulted in several accidents in Saudi Arabia’s second city Jeddah.
Makkah also suffered as a result of the storm. Maritime traffic was suspended in and out of Jeddah’s port due to poor visibility.
King Abdul Aziz airport authorities announced that smooth operations continued at the airport despite the storm.
Earlier, the sandstorms led to temporary closure of 6 airports in northern Saudi Arabia due to strong wind mixed with dust.

Duterte wants ethnic community protection under BBL

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte is concerned that the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law would not be able to resolve ethnic rivalry between tribes in Mindanao.
The president said he wants to ensure that the proposed BBL would be able to cover all the issues of indigenous people so that problems will not arise the event that the proposal becomes law.
“Itong BBL tignan nating mabuti pero it is going on in Congress. Tumatakbo yan but ako prangka-prangka lang. Bobo ako diyan sa true sentiments pero ito ngayon nangangamba ako. Would it do well to mix it all in one pot? Meaning to say, kayo bang mga Jolojano handa na mamumuno ang isang Maranao kagaya ng ARMM ngayon?” said the president.
(We are looking into the BBL carefully. It is going on in Congress. It’s ongoing but frankly, I’m not that knowledgeable about the true sentiments. But this is now my concern. Would it do well to mix it all in one pot? Meaning to say, are the Jolojanos prepared to be led by a Maranao like how it is in the ARMM now?)
The government is set to talk to all the tribal groups in the region to discuss the possible set-up of governance under the BBL.
The president said he will talk to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and even the terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).
“I just want to see if everybody is treated equally and opportunity is also available to everybody, and the same standard, no favoritism. Yan lang. I’m pleading for peace talagang hinihingi ko sa inyo buong puso kapayapaan para sa lahat,” said Duterte.
(I just want to see if everybody is treated equally and opportunity is also available to everybody and the same standard, no favoritism. That’s all. I’m pleading for peace. I’m asking for it for the peace of everyone.)
Nevertheless this proposal has been met with opposition.
Among those who oppose is Sulu Gov. Abdusakurtan.
“Ang gusto namin federalism over BBL kasi tingin namin wala namang pinagkaiba yung existing regional government at saka yung gagawing Bangsamoro Basic Law kung mayroon mang pagkakaiba kunting-kunti lang,” said the governor.
(We want federalism over the BBL because we think there is no difference in the existing regional government and the Bangsamoro Basic Law. If there are differences, it’s only a few.)
The president said  the government will address first the controversial contents of the proposal before passing it into law.

Pilot recount on Marcos’ poll protest vs. Robredo set on Monday

MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court (SC) has prepared the basketball gym situated on the fifth floor of the SC-CA Building.
It is an enclosed area, air-conditioned with CCTV cameras even from its atrium and each of its corners.
The pilot recount will be held there for the protest of Bongbong Marcos against the victory of Vice President Leni Robredo.
The tables have been set for the 50 revision committees that will conduct the manual counting.
Also lined up were the ballot boxes from  Camarines Sur, one of the three provinces that Marcos identified for the recount.
“At the moment, we already have a full complement of the Presidential Electoral Tribunal,” said Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET)  ad hoc committee vice chair Atty. Ma. Cunanan.
This coming Monday, the pilot recount will begin for the 5,400 clustered precincts. But according to the presidential tribunal, only 40 revision committees will do the recount.
Each ballot will be scrutinized and the votes will be recounted for Marcos and Robredo.
They will also mark the ballots that each party will question.
“The objections and claims will just be recorded. The purpose now is really to get the objections and claims because it will be the tribunal who will rule on those,” said PET ad hoc committee member Atty. Lemuel Arenas.
The recount will be held from Monday until Friday, at 8:30 in the morning until 4:30 in the afternoon.
They have limited time to complete the review of each ballot box, and a minute was only allotted to examine each ballot.
No deadline has been set for completing the pilot recount. But in Camarines Sur alone, it may likely take over two months before completing the manual recount.
